Why "Stay Woke Tarot"
The phrase “stay woke” has been around for a while, even before Empress Erykah Badu gifted us with “Master Teacher” (check out video below).
From what I can discern, the first reference appears in a speech given by Dr. Martin Luther King in 1968 at Stanford, “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution”. While Dr. King didn’t use the exact phrase, he did base this important speech on the concept keeping your eyes open when change is afoot.
Dr. King references the story of Rip Van Winkle in his speech. If you recall, the character went up a mountain and took a 20-year-long nap. When he ascended, he saw a sign of King George III. When he came down two decades later, the sign had the image of George Washington.
“And this reveals to us that the most striking thing about the story of Rip Van Winkle is not merely that Rip slept twenty years, but that he slept through a revolution. [...] And one of the great liabilities of life is that all too many people find themselves living amid a great period of social change, and yet they fail to develop the new attitudes, the new mental responses, that the new situation demands. They end up sleeping through a revolution.”
We're in a time of revolution: globally, locally, personally and politically. All of these factors are connected. Remaining aware and observing these connections on a continuous basis is a matter of "psychic survival." In my opinion, by using Tarot to tap into the collective unconscious, we can do that.
